EXPLORE (The Journal of Science & Healing) published an article that came out of our conversation with Dr. Mikhail Kogan, MD, ABIOM, RCST, and founder of the Center for Integrative Medicine.

The Alexander Technique (AT) aligns perfectly with the holistic philosophy of integrative geriatrics. It's a gentle, non-invasive method focusing on improving posture, movement, and overall body awareness. This approach addresses the root causes of many age-related physical limitations, rather than just treating symptoms. Research supports AT's effectiveness. For instance, Randomised controlled trial of Alexander technique lessons, exercise, and massage (ATEAM) for chronic and recurrent back pain: economic evaluation. These findings indicate a significant reduction in pain and improved functional capacity for participants. In essence, the research strongly suggests that the Alexander Technique is a valuable tool for enhancing the health and well-being of older adults.

My own experience working with elderly patients reinforces these findings. Some of my clients quote "I am learning to stand, sit, and move in a more natural, less stressful and less painful manner. This teaching has already helped reduce my arthritis pain considerably" "Alexander technique helped to overcome years of chronic pain and migraines" "Our lessons improved posture and movement, which I believe helped reduce and prevent problems caused by Parkinson's Disease /pain."These personal experiences highlight the transformative impact of this technique.

Dr Kogan is a leader in the newly established field of Integrative Geriatrics. He is the chief editor of the first definitive textbook of the field entitled “Integrative Geriatric Medicine ”.

"In conclusion, the Alexander Technique offers a proven, non-invasive option to improve the health and well-being of older adults. As demonstrated by the UK's acceptance of AT within its national healthcare system, integrating such therapies is not only possible but also beneficial for patients and healthcare systems alike. The US healthcare system must recognize the value of AT and take steps to make this intervention accessible to the geriatric population, ensuring that older adults receive the comprehensive, patient-centered care they deserve."
